Senior Cost Accountant

Kova International, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Cost Accountant to be a part of our team at the Garden Grove, CA location. Kova International located in Garden Grove, California is a manufacturer of high quality Controls and disposable Plastics for Clinical Laboratories and Hospitals globally.  Kova International, Inc. has 2 subsidiaries, Biochemical Diagnostics located in Long Island, NY and Kova International, B.V., a Dutch company.   

The individual reporting to the Controller will be responsible for cost accounting in a QAD (MFG/Pro) environment. Primary duties and responsibilities include ensuring accurate and timely financial closing related to our manufacturing operations related to cost accounting journal entries and reconciliations; ensuring compliance with cost accounting policies and procedures; internal controls; analyzing, interpreting, and presenting relevant and timely labor, work order, gross margin and inventory data to management to make business decisions.  This role will provide oversight of Standard Product Costing for all sites.

 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accounting and Financial Reporting for inventory and manufacturing cost.
  • Develop an understanding of manufacturing operations; alert management to potential issues, when appropriate.
  • Proactively develop reporting tools, reports and analyze information enabling operational counterparts and management to respond to potential exposures.
  • Maintain standard material, labor and overhead costs.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconcile inventories to balance sheet.
  • Prepare detailed account analysis and reconcile sales, cost and inventory, liability accounts by customer type by division.
  • Review and analyze inventory and margin reports, conducts research and performs analytical studies with regards to cost analyses and profitability.
  • Review and adjust inventory reserves in accordance with accounting policies.
  • Analyze gross margin, labor and overhead, other cost of sales, inventory trends and turnover ratios, and production yield data.
  • Prepare audit schedules and footnote disclosures (on an annual basis).
  • Support business unit and manufacturing groups with labor, overhead, manufacturing yields and inventory analysis.
  • Ensure timely submission, accuracy and validity of inventory, gross margin schedules to management.
  • Maintain internal control documentation and tests internal controls, assisting with compliance and improvement of internal manufacturing costing processes and internal control requirements as needed.
  • Inventory Accounting and Control including calculation of standard rates and allocations.
  • Analyze cost accounting data and work with Manufacturing to plan and conduct cycle counts/physical inventories.
  • Reconcile cycle counts/physical inventories to QAD systems for applicable location.
  • Management Accounting/Reporting and Analysis.
  • Support and assist in Product/Customer margin analysis by reviewing, correcting and reconciling QAD transactions that drive detailed product line P&L reporting.
    • Reconciliation involves detailed analysis of business activity by P&L account, profit center and profitability segment (e.g. customer/product)
  • Support the analysis of variances incurred during production and purchasing activities by comparing the basis for standard cost (work orders reports and efficiency reports).
  • Ensure timely completion of month-end process for settlement of production orders, CIP orders and WBS elements.
  • Work in collaboration with the finance team members on the month end financial closing activities.
  • Perform allocations on a monthly basis and ensure the results correctly reflect allocation logic agreed by management.
  • Manage the periodic process for collection and processing of cost center plan data.
  • Ensure the timely update to Activity Type rates (direct labor and engineering labor rates)
    • Assist in processing of engineering changes to BOM, BOO and perform subsequent roll-ups and roll-overs of standards and report accordingly.
  • Provide oversight for standard costing methodology and analysis for all subsidiaries of Kova International
  • Assist with any Ad Hoc Projects and Analysis as required by management
  • Assist other Finance team members as needed and as necessary.
  • Perform all other projects and duties as necessary and assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting with emphasis in cost accounting (preferred)
  • 5+ years professional cost accounting experience (experience in biomed industry or similar medical manufacturing environment preferred)
  • 2+ years in a QAD environment preferred
  • QAD costing experience required
  • Must possess strong knowledge of Cost Accounting Standards Principles and the ability to analyze and reconcile complex accounts and reserves. 
  • Ability to apply knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles & Cost Accounting Standards is necessary.
  • Must have high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, etc)
